Krill Oil… How do I write this without boring the hell out of everyone? As a fitness professional who knows and understands the benefits of krill oil, I do feel obligated to make sure that I’m able to influence as many people as possible to start consuming krill oil as if their life depended on it because in some ways it does.
But let’s face it, if you’re reading an article titled for example, “6 benefits of taking krill oil,” one of a few things is going on, you’re a health professional like myself, someone you trust told you to take krill, or you’ve been sitting on the toilet so long reading on your phone that your feed is so exhausted that the only thing left is the krill oil article. So rather than just listing all of the crazy benefits for you, I’d like to ask you some questions. Here’s the thing, if you answer yes to any of these questions, do me a favor, scratch that, do yourself a damn favor, and start taking krill oil immediately. But first things first, because I’m willing to bet dollars to donuts that some of you are asking yourselves, “what the hell is krill oil?’ allow me to enlighten you.
What is krill oil?
That’s the question I asked myself quite a few years back when I first heard about krill oil. Krill? Huh? What the hell is a krill?
Krill are tiny crustaceans, basically they look like shrimp only smaller and they’re a food source for sea birds, whales, and fish.
Krill feed on phytoplankton and they actually make up the largest bio mass of any animal species, translation, they’re like the cockroach of the sea and they aren’t going extinct anytime soon.
The reason that Krill Oil has become so popular over the last few years is that it is high in EFA’s (essential fatty acids), is more bioavailable than fish oil, contains a powerful antioxidant knows as Astaxanthin and has a longer shelf life than fish oil.
For those of you who don’t know or aren’t aware of what essential fatty acids are, well, they’re fatty acids that are ESSENTIAL to nearly every fundamental process in the human body. More specifically they're known as omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids. The human body actually produces some fatty acids itself. Omega 3’s and Omega 6’s however, cannot be produced naturally within the human body, so they must be consumed through food or supplementation. The problem is that the average “healthy” American diet leaves you extremely deficient in Omega 3’s, causing all kinds of problems you may not even realize you have. This is where krill oil comes in.

If you answered no to this question: we can assume one of two things. Either you’re 20 years old and dying to be able to get hammered legally, or you have something going wrong with that lump between your ears.
If you answered yes to this question: congratulations. You’re sane. You’re also in luck because krill oil may just be the answer to your prayers. When I ask the question, “would you like to age slower?” In this instance I’m referring to the effect aging has on your appearance, i.e. your skin. Krill oil does however have many positive effects on other issues associated with the aging process, which we’ll cover as we continue, but back to keeping you looking pretty.
The powerful antioxidant astaxanthin and omega 3 fatty acids found in krill oil can reduce the effects of aging on your skin. This means your face won’t look like a crumpled up brown paper bag, but more like that soft, porcelain, angelic, complexion you had as a youth. Astaxanthin helps to break down free radicals which when present in excessive amounts break down the body’s tissue. In skin, free radicals from aging and exposure to ultra-violet light cause breakdowns in collagen and elastin fibers resulting in lack of elasticity and wrinkles. The high concentration of Omega 3’s in krill help to normalize skin lipids, keeping your skin strong and hydrated, which decreases the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

If you answered no to this question: In this particular case I’m not going to give you too hard of a time because you’re probably some emo kid, perhaps the world’s best computer hacker even, and since I don’t really feel like having my life messed with… I love you, you’re the best!
If you answered yes: The long-chain, omega 3 fatty acids Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) and Docosahexaeonic Acid (DHA), have shown, in some research to be as effective as many antidepressants at elevating mood. DHA has been shown to increase dopamine and serotonin, which are our “feel good hormones,” and help to alleviate depression and put you in a better mood. EPA enhances mood by reducing inflammation in the brain, which has been shown to reduce depression.
Would you like to have milder PMS symptoms?
If you answered no: You’re probably a guy, and let’s face it fellas, you want your lovely lady to stay pretty even keel around that special time. There’s less chance of you dying prematurely from forgetting to take out the trash or buy onions at the grocery store. Gentleman, you can place your order here.
If you answered yes: Acne, upset stomach, bloating, fatigue, insomnia, diarrhea, headache, backache, food cravings, joint and muscle pain, poor concentration or memory, mood swings, anxiety, and depression. All symptoms associated with PMS. Ladies, it’s no wonder you want to chop our heads off and stick them on a pole sometimes. It doesn’t have to be that bad though.

PLoS ONE many of the physical symptoms of PMS are great reduced or even disappear since most of these physical symptoms are directly associated with inflammation. As far as the emotional benefits, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that if you aren’t in pain, can’t sleep, or on the toilet, you’ll be in a better mood. Nevertheless, for the same reason that Omega 3’s reduce depression, they also help with the mood swings of “the lady week” by increasing dopamine and serotonin secretion.

If you only answered yes: In a famous study called the Framingham Heart Study, two-thirds of the adult population of Framingham, MA, totaling 5,209 people in all were monitored for 57 years. One of the findings of this study showed that only 180 milligrams per day of the Omega 3 DHA, the equivalent of about 2.5 servings of fish per week, was associated with a 50% reduced risk of dementia.
For the average person, risk of dementia probably doesn’t keep you up at night. But if you ever had a loved one who can’t remember your name, their spouses name, even their own name, much less how to get home or find the bathroom, you understand the pain this causes. Do yourself a favor and start preventing it by taking krill now, while you can still remember to do so.
Would you like to lower your risk of Heart Disease?
If you said no: C’mon man, have a heart! Ok that was stupid. But in the famous words of Forrest Gump, “Stupid is as stupid does,” and you said no to a yes question so you’re stupid, dummy.

We’re all going to die but I would expect that most of us would like to ride this train as long as possible right?
